The Data Engineer has a pivotal role within the Data Analytics Department, focused on creating and driving engineering innovation and facilitating the delivery of key business initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Data Analytics (DDA), the Data Engineer serves as a “universal translator” between IT, business, analytics, and data scientists to deliver value. Incumbents in this role will work on aspects of our platforms that govern ingestion, transformation, and pipelining of data assets, both to end users within TaxSlayer and into data products and services that may be externally facing.
We are looking for someone with strong technical capabilities and exceptional communication skills to optimize and modernize TaxSlayer’s ecosystem and pipelines at big data scale.
You will work closely with other members in the department as well as with key personnel within the Product, Development, Information Security, Information Technology, Marketing, Finance, and other departments to assist in the development and strategic alignment of enterprise architecture.
What You Will Do:
- Design and develop scalable ETL solutions to deliver data from source systems to analytics platforms (structured and unstructured; batch and streaming).
- Responsible for testing and validation to support the accuracy of data transformations and data verification used with company-wide analytics.
- Support and optimize data tools and associated cloud environments for consumption by downstream systems, data analysts and data scientists.
- Ensure code, configuration and other technology artifacts are delivered within agreed time schedules and any potential delays are escalated in advance.
- Strive to engineering excellence by simplifying, optimizing, and automating processes and workflows.
- Assist in ensuring proper data governance (quality, security, etc.) within the data lake and enterprise data warehouse systems across all business segments.
- Assist with performance-tuning data processes as well as troubleshooting data processing issues.
- Collaborate, coordinate, and communicate across disciplines, departments, and segments.
- Develop rapid prototyping and design processes for fast solution delivery to the business.
- Maintain reference architecture and documentation for the purposes of architectural governance and application roadmap.
- Assist in educating others on best practices surrounding data work (i.e., data modeling, database design, ETL design, job scheduling and monitoring, etc.).
- Ability to communicate effectively with different levels of leadership within the organization.
What We Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science or a related field with eight (8) or more years of working as a data engineer, ETL developer and/or data warehouse DBA.
- Experience with Cloud data tools and architecture, including Snowflake, Azure Data Factory, Data Lake, and Synapse.
- Experience with finance, operations, software firms, or supply chain.
- Experience with Analytic tools, such as Power BI, Tableau, or Cognos.
- Experience with traditional ETL tools such as IBM DataStage, SSIS, or Informatica
- Strong proficiency with SQL and Python.
- Experience in distributed architectures such as SOA, RESTful APIs, and data integration architectures.
- Experience designing and implementing big data and analytics solutions in financial services environment is Highly Preferred.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team.
- Display excellent interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leadership and peers
